Some people in the crowd have a yellow banner
with the words "God Save The Philippines."
To me it says more than just that . . .
This picture was taken on EDSA Highway, right in front of Camp Crame.
The words say - "God Save The Philippines."
Over 90% of Filipinos are Roman Catholic. The remaining percentage of Filipinos are Islams and Protestants.
To me this banner and its words are symbolic of the Filipino people's faith in God which did much to strengthen People Power. Everywhere people were not just joining the People Power movement in protest and defiance of Marcos' rigged elections, but they were also praying!
Because of prayer and faith, filipinos were not afraid to take to the streets and stand in front of guns, bullets and tanks.
The flag was yellow, which stood for Laban - - - Cory Aquino for President and "out-with-you-Marcos!"
Even the Army put their trust in God during this situation. Please note that the figure of Our Lady is being held above the heads of the generals as they stood outside of Camp Crame to talk to the crowds.
As the crowd stood on EDSA Highway, in front of Camp Crame, one group of people started praying the rosary and many people joined in. I prayed, too. We all prayed. It was as if we were in the Cathedral but instead we were on the street, keenly aware of the soldiers of the opposing sides, pro-Marcos and anti-Marcos.
We prayed that God would protect the soldiers who broke away from Marcos.
We prayed that He would keep us safe as we stood there between the opposite forces. (see picture contribution of approaching tanks).
We prayed that Marcos would finally give up his power and his Dynasty and would concede that Corazon Aquino was indeed the honest and true winner of the Presidential Elections. (see picture contribution of Mass being held during elections).
Well, you know what? Alot of Filipinos believe that God answered all our prayers.
Noone was killed that day, no soldier or civilian bystander (see Channel 4 link). And on the following day, Marcos left the country, and left Corazon Aquino to replace him as President.
The Marcos Reign was over because of the Corazon Aquino, Laban movement, The New Armed Forces and because of filipino People Power. And to many of us Filipinos, because of God.
I would later read Newsweek and Time issues in Manila and realize that the international press failed to put emphasis on this important element of the People Power movement. I was indignant and angry at that time.
But now I am disappointed - - - in the standpoints and
bias that worldwide news is imparted almost all of the time.
